El Paso, TX: El Paso dentist, Dr. Mehrnoosh Darj has been running a contest to reward local youths for a few years. She called this the “Good Deed” contest.
Dr. Darj launched the Do A Good Deed Contest with a hope to give youths a chance to look at their actions. “No one can tell you what a good deed is and what you wish to do. You are the judge of it.” said Darj.
The essay contest was open to any youth 18 years of age and under to inspire youths to perform good deeds and submit an essay or video about what they have accomplished.
This time a winning good deed video was submitted about the story of 4-year-old Kai Silva, who will be awarded the grand prize, a brand new iPad, on Thursday June 18th at 10am in Dr Darj’s office at 1861 Robert Wynn Street Suite D, El Paso, TX 79936.
Silva learned that his teacher had a caterpillar problem in her garden, and she was going to exterminate them. Together with his dad, Silva went on a rescue mission and put the caterpillars into jars. He helped them to grow and even brought them to school to show his friends how caterpillars could be helped. The caterpillars became butterflies and he released them.
“I was taught by my dad that every living thing deserves a chance, even bugs.” said Silva.
Dr. Darj said, “The compassion of caring for creepy crawlies, sometimes even a bug, is what makes this act of kindness so mindful. I am happy to see parents teaching the younger generation how all aspects of life can be helped.”
Dr. Darj also picked a 2nd place winner – Clarissa Gardea from El Paso. Gardea wrote an essay about her grandfather’s disability and how she helped him out with chores. She felt good that she was giving him guidance through a rough time.
The purpose of the contest is to inspire our youths to reach out to help another in times of need.
